Health Benefits of Blackberry (not the phone)

One of the most beneficial health property of blackberry is its high Vitamin C content. One cup contains almost 50% of our daily requirement of vitamin C.  As we all know, vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant which boosts our immune system.  A daily helping of blackberry in our diet will help lower the risk of heart disease
as well as prevent some types of cancer. Blackberries also contain natural phytoestrogens, are high in fiber, low in sugar content and has Vitamin K ( 1 cup = 36% RDA).

Other health benefits we can get from eating blackberries:
  • Help keep at bay wrinkles and other skin damages.
  • Relieve common symptoms of premenstrual syndrome - bloating in the abdomen.
  • Maintain the function of brain and the health of our immune system.
  • Help in relieving constipation, hemorrhoids and diabetes.
  • Help in blood clotting and strengthening of bones.

Last but not least, blackberry is an important component of our diet when we want to lose weight. One cup of blackberries contains the full daily RDA for fibers.

Blackberries are available frozen or fresh.  Eating freshly picked fruits will give you the highest nutritional value, but the frozen ones do keep their nutrients with minimal loss.

Learning to live without Fat

Oh how I love to eat ice cream...the creamy ones best and hamburgers and french fries and all the delicious scrumptiousness of all fatty foods...

Juicy steaks
Rich chocolate cakes
Fruit salad smothered in rich whipped cream

But then, my life took a turn.  Doctor's order:  No Fatty Food

That order is a life-changer for me.  Imagine me having to eat with my family while they continue to experience the joys of eating fat.  Sucks, right?

Re-educating my taste buds is what I did.  It's a slow process but I survived the journey.

In my search for the right menu for me, I learned that not all fats are bad.  There are the so-called good kind, but still I had to be careful.  I'm aware, we need fat in our diet but only in moderation, even the right kind.

Two kinds of Bad Fat:
  • Saturated Fats
  • Trans Fats
Saturated fats are found in meat (all kinds), milk, cheese and eggs.  Trans fats are found in the things we love most like doughnuts, cakes, cookies, chips, etc.  A word of warning:  Eating a lot of trans fats leads to a bigger belly and early heart disease.


I built my personal menu around lean chicken breast, milkfish (which is abundant here), tea, fresh fruit juice, fresh fruits (especially bananas), steamed rice and lots of veggies.


Last I visited my doctor, she was happy.  I also lost 10 kilos.  Oh I forgot, I am also on a low-salt diet.
